Gastrin regulates the growth of the acid-producing cells of the gastric mucosa. Increased levels are seen in patients with duodenal and pyloric ulcers, and with gastrinoma (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome). The main actions of the hormone are to stimulate gastric acid secretion and contraction of the gastric musculature. Its release is stimulated by distension of the antrum, by the action of peptides at the gastric antrum, and by inadequate acid production. The latter appears to act as a negative feedback controlling gastric acid homeostasis.
